Tile and backsplash installation across Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia

A backsplash is the most visible 30 square feet in a kitchen, and it is a two day job done right. Day one sets the tile on a clean, flat wall with the layout centered on the range. Day two grouts, cleans, seals and caulks the line at the counter and the inside corners, which is where cheap tile jobs fail first.

Tell us what needs fixing. We text back within the hour, 8 to 6.

How the job goes

We do backsplashes, tub and shower surround repairs, a small bath floor and a mudroom floor. Large format tile, subway, mosaic sheets and the newer porcelain slabs all set differently, and we tell you what the one you picked needs before the estimate goes out.

Jobs we take

  • Kitchen backsplash, subway, mosaic or large format
  • Tub and shower surround tile replaced or repaired
  • Small bath, laundry or mudroom floor
  • Cracked or loose tile replaced and matched
  • Regrout and recaulk on a tub or shower
  • Outlet and switch plates reset flush with the new tile

Who installs tile and backsplash in Maryland

Tile work is home improvement under section 8-101(g), so it is done for pay by an MHIC licensed contractor and no trade license beyond that is needed. Setting, grouting, sealing and caulking are all handyman work on our crew.

Two things on a backsplash can bring a trade. The receptacles in the backsplash sit back from the new tile face, and extending those boxes forward is electrical services under section 6-101(k), so the electrician does it. Moving a faucet or a supply line behind a surround is plumbing under section 12-101(n). The estimate names those lines when the job has them.

In Maryland, any work on wiring, a fixture or an electrical connection is electrical services under section 6-101(k) and belongs to a licensed master electrician or someone working under one. An MHIC license alone does not cover it.

The Maryland rule in full, with the statute sections, is on the Old Line Home Repair license page.

What it costs

Tile is priced by the job, not by the foot, and the price covers layout, setting, grout, sealer and caulk. The nearest finished job on our list is a bathroom sink re anchored and recaulked in DC this October for $287 with a new toilet seat. A backsplash is a two day job and the estimate carries one number for it.

  • Bathroom sink re anchored and recaulked, new toilet seat
