What range hood installation costs
A range hood install is one visit for the handyman, or one visit with the electrician added when the hood is hardwired. We have not billed one on the public list yet, so the finished install and fixture jobs we have billed are below for scale. The estimate names each trade on its own line so the number is clear before the visit.

What moves the price
- Hardwired or plug in is the first question. Hardwired brings the electrician for the connection.
- A duct that matches the hood collar is a straight hookup. A size change or a crushed duct behind the old hood adds an adapter and sealing time.
- A chimney style wall hood needs the studs found and a chimney cover cut to the ceiling height, which takes longer than an under cabinet swap.
- A hood taller than the old one means trimming the cabinet or adding a filler, priced into the same visit.

Cost questions
- Does replacing a range hood need a permit in Maryland?
- A like for like swap on the existing wiring and duct does not in the counties we work. A new circuit or a new duct through the wall or roof does, and the electrician or the handyman pulls it depending on which it is.
- Can a handyman wire the range hood?
- Not in Maryland. The wire connection is electrical services under section 6-101(k) and goes to a licensed electrician. On our jobs the electrician makes the connection and the handyman hangs and seals the hood.
- My kitchen has no duct. Can I still have a hood?
- Yes, as a recirculating hood with a charcoal filter. It clears smoke and grease but not steam or heat. A ducted hood needs a run to an outside wall or the roof, which we quote as a separate job.
How the work itself goes is on the range hood installation page.
